Introduction to Divvyrian Sonnets & Style Rules

This is a new weekly feature beginning February 2018 I hope to keep up with: hammering out a completely new sonnet every Sunday to be posted here on Divvyry. I can also include various notes about its process, rhymes I liked but ultimately decided against, and other bits of interest about sonnets in general.

My preferred version of a sonnet is comprised of 10 lines, each line with 10 syllables, accented on the even beats. The last word of each line will rhyme with the last word of another line, in the form of AB, AB, CD, CD, EE.

For example, if I were to cut off the ends of the lines, they might rhyme like this:

.. scorch,
.. work.

.. torch,
.. clerk.

.. rank,
.. seat.

.. clank,
.. treat.

.. stuffed,
.. tuft.

..but the line pairs need not necessarily form strictly one sentence. Each line could be its own sentence, or contain multiple sentences, or the whole thing could be one long sentence, or any variation thereof, as long as the even-beat still sounds right to my ear.

A few of the more established forms of sonnets include:

>> Spenserian sonnets have 14 lines,
> in pattern ABAB BCBC CDCD EE

>> Petrarchan/Italian sonnets have 14 lines,
> in either ABBAABBA + CDECDE, or ABBAABBA + CDCDCD.

>> English/Shakespearan sonnets have 14 lines,
> in ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG.

I can’t really find an established version of this particular sonnet type, so until I do, I’m calling this a Divvyrian (div-EAR-e-an) sonnet form. My use of 10 lines instead of 14 is a preference of a 10×10 visual concept (ten lines, ten syllables each) as well as my own natural sense of its flow, whereas 14 lines feels a little excessive.

There is a fairly exhaustive compilation of around 175+ sonnet forms listed here, if you’re considering devising your own unique sonnet form =)

Dreamed Dance Style: Gel Tapping

Moments ago, I woke from a dream about a sport new to me called Gel Tapping, which I was looking up on YouTube in the dream and deciding to follow the career of one particular performer who was quite talented at.

Gel Tapping is a prop-based breakdance/streetdance performance, that uses a kind of pliable-resin prop that is tapped, clapped, or otherwise used percussively rhythmically throughout the performance. Performance is judged by a team of 20-ish who stand around nearby as a crowded-in audience among any others gathered, judging on various metrics.

Master List of Quicker Than/ Faster Than -Jokes

Here is a list of several of the best “Quicker than a..” or “Faster than a..” one-liners that I made up or found online. I was trying to come up with something funny for a Facebook comment about how quickly I would have kicked a romantic potential to the curb based on an action he had taken against a lady friend (installing password trackers on her computer), and had trouble finding very many good ones, so I decided to make my own list!

..quicker than your mother can unbutton her overalls.
..quicker than [fat celebrity] would sign up for a butter convention (groundhog-at-a-cabbage-convention, etc)
..faster than a cheetah could pounce on a limping [political figure].
..faster than a speeding ticket.
..more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Master List of Fish/Sea Puns “Not On Porpoise” Etc

Since there wasn’t one readily available that I could find, I decided to make a list of ocean puns, underwater puns, fish puns, and the like. If you have any like this, feel free to add them in the comments below (no registration required). Special thanks go to comic Kip Adotta, who is well-known among word nerds for his song-like speaking sets that were loaded with puns of a certain subject.

I didn’t do it on porpoise!

Don’t give me that line.

I don’t quite sea it.

He’s just fishing for compliments.

She’s angling for a raise.

I’m fin to get busy.

Master List of Music Puns, “Not Your Forte” Etc

(feel free to add your own in the comments, no registration required)

I didn’t want my kids to join band or orchestra, and risk being exposed to so much sax and violins.

It only leads to treble.

How clef-er.

I’ve been told I’m pretty sharp.

These jokes always fall flat.

People just don’t measure up.

We just don’t have the staff for it.

Didn’t you get my note?

I’ve had to scale back.

K-Pop Identifying Guide: Which one is Taeyeon?

Help finding out which member in a music video is Taeyeon.

This is an ongoing series to help people new to K-Pop/Korean Pop, to identify the members within a group. As westerners or other people unfamiliar with more typical facial structures of other cultures, being able to tell one person from another can be difficult at first.

I am easily the biggest SNSD fan that I’ve ever known in person, but for a long time I couldn’t distinguish between Seohyun and Yuri very easily, although now it is very easy to me.

This series examines 3 music videos that each Kpop star appears in, and points out which one they are.

Proof of Artificial Facebook Trending Topics? Pasted Identical Opinions..

I recently clicked on the trending topic of Emily Ratajkowski posing head-to-toe nude for Bazaar magazine, and the first result was a guy who noticed something: almost all of the user-written statuses about the article supposedly expressing their unique opinion were essentially the same copy pasted in, but with a few minor variations.
